What Is Trash Bin Cleaning? A Plain Definition of the Service

Trash bin cleaning is a curbside service that washes, sanitizes and deodorizes household garbage and recycling carts. What a visit involves and who it is for.

Cleaning5 min readUpdated

Trash bin cleaning is a service that washes, sanitizes and deodorizes the wheeled garbage and recycling carts a household or business puts out for collection. A crew comes to the curb after the garbage truck has emptied the cart, washes the inside, lid and outside with hot water under pressure, treats it against bacteria and odor, and leaves it ready to use.

The BinFather does this work across Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach County in South Florida. This is the plain version of what the service is, what happens during a visit, and who it actually makes sense for.

What is trash bin cleaning?

Trash bin cleaning is the professional washing of the rolling trash and recycling carts that sit outside a home or business. The service removes the grease, food film and dried liquid that build up inside a cart, kills the bacteria living on that residue, and deodorizes the plastic, so the cart stops smelling and stops attracting flies, roaches and rodents.

It is sometimes called trash can cleaning, garbage can cleaning or bin washing. They are the same service. For businesses, the same idea applied to large containers is called dumpster cleaning.

What happens during a trash bin cleaning visit?

A trash bin cleaning visit happens at the curb, on the customer's collection day, once the garbage truck has emptied the cart. The cart is washed where it stands, then sanitized and deodorized, and the area around it is tidied. Nobody has to be home, and nothing has to be moved or rinsed beforehand.

When The BinFather cleans a cart, the visit runs in four steps:

  1. 01We come to you — on your collection day, after the truck has emptied the cart.
  2. 02We wash the whole cart — the interior walls, the base where liquid collects, the rim, the underside of the lid and the outside shell.
  3. 03We sanitize and deodorize — a biodegradable treatment goes in behind the wash to kill bacteria and take the smell with it.
  4. 04We clean up after ourselves — the area around the bin is tidied before we leave.

The trash bin cleaning page shows each step in more detail.

Why can't a garden hose do the same job?

A garden hose cannot do the same job because hose water at hose pressure only moves the top layer of residue around. Food waste leaves fats, sugars and proteins that dry into a film bonded to the cart wall. Hot water under real pressure loosens that bond and carries the film away, which is the part that smells.

The order matters as well. Cleaning removes dirt; sanitizing kills germs on what is left. The CDC's household guidance says to wash surfaces with soap and water first, to remove dirt and debris, and only then sanitize. A professional bin cleaning follows the same sequence: wash first, then treat.

Where does the dirty water go during trash bin cleaning?

During a BinFather trash bin cleaning, the dirty water goes into a collection tank on our truck or trailer — nothing is left on your property. We bring our own water to the job, so nothing is drawn from your outdoor tap either.

Who is trash bin cleaning for?

Trash bin cleaning is for anyone whose cart smells, draws pests, or is a chore they do not want to do themselves. In South Florida that covers a lot of households, because heat and humidity speed up the bacteria that break down residue, so a dirty cart turns faster here than in a cooler climate.

It tends to matter most for:

  • Households with diapers, pet waste or cat litter in the cart, which create strong ammonia smells.
  • Homes where the cart sits in full sun or in the garage, where heat and closed air make the smell worse.
  • Anyone who cannot easily tip, scrub and rinse a heavy cart, including older residents.
  • New homeowners who inherited a cart from the previous owner.
  • Vacation rentals and Airbnbs, where guests notice the bin.
  • HOAs, restaurants and property managers with shared cart banks or dumpsters.

It matters less for a small household that bags everything, rinses the cart now and then, and keeps it in the shade. Some people genuinely do not need it, and that is fine.

How often should a trash bin be cleaned?

Most South Florida households do best with a trash bin cleaning once a month, because in the heat a cart can go from clean to smelling within a few weeks. A cart that is used lightly and kept in the shade can go longer. Our guide on how often to clean a trash can goes through the signs that tell you which camp you are in.

How much does trash bin cleaning cost?

Trash bin cleaning with The BinFather costs $30 a visit on the monthly plan, a one-year plan paid $30 a month — or $324 for the year up front, 10% off the $360. Every price covers two bins, and each additional bin is $10. Every 3 months is $50 a visit, also a one-year plan, paid each quarter or $190 for the year up front (5% off the $200). A single one-time clean, with no subscription, is $65.

For businesses, commercial dumpster cleaning starts at $99 for one container, and the price changes with how many containers there are. Every plan is laid out on the pricing page.

Is trash bin cleaning the same as dumpster cleaning?

Trash bin cleaning and dumpster cleaning are the same idea applied to different containers. Trash bin cleaning covers the wheeled carts a home puts at the curb. Dumpster cleaning covers the large containers used by restaurants, HOAs, condominiums and apartment buildings, along with cart banks, corrals and chute rooms.

Commercial containers are never fully empty and are shared by many people, so residue builds up faster and the work is scheduled around business or resident hours. You can request a commercial quote for a property.
