How Often Should You Clean Your Trash Can in South Florida?

Monthly is right for most South Florida households. At that interval a bin never accumulates enough to turn, so each visit is a quick one and the cart stays in a steady state rather than swinging between clean and unbearable.

But the interval that is right for you comes down to four things.

1. Where the bin sits

A cart in full afternoon sun runs hot every day, and heat is what drives odour out and speeds bacterial growth up. A cart in a shaded side yard runs cooler but never dries out, and humidity does its own work. Both are worse than a bin on a breezy open driveway — the sun bin smells sooner, the shade bin grows more.

2. What goes in it

A household that bags its food waste carefully produces far less residue than one that does not. Loose food waste, leaking bags and liquid poured into the bin are what build the film. If you are careful about this, you can genuinely stretch the interval.

3. Diapers, pet waste, or seafood

These three change the maths on their own. Diapers and pet waste introduce ammonia and a great deal of biological material. Seafood is a category of its own — fish oils soak into the surface of the plastic rather than sitting on it, which is why a bin that held fish scraps smells fine after a rinse and then does not, an hour later.

Any of the three and you want monthly at minimum, and often shorter over the summer.

4. Whether you can smell it from the front door

This is the real test, and it beats any schedule. If you can smell the bin before you reach it, the interval you are on is too long.

• Monthly — the default, and what we recommend for most homes. Nothing gets a chance to build.
• Every 3 months — lighter upkeep for a careful household. Fine if the bin is barely used.
• One-time, when you need it — a bin that has gone too far, a move-in, a house sale, or after a bad week. No schedule and no commitment.

This surprises people, so it is worth stating plainly: a bin cleaned monthly costs less per cleaning than a bin cleaned once a year.

That is not a subscription trick. A cart cleaned every month has thirty days of light residue on it and takes a few minutes. A cart left twelve months has a bonded layer that takes heat, time and more treatment to remove. You are paying for the work in front of us, not for the calendar — which is why our monthly rate is $30 a cleaning and a single one-time clean is $65, both covering two bins.

Recycling gets overlooked because people assume it stays clean — nothing rots in there. But drink containers, sauce jars and food packaging leave sugar residue on the plastic, and sugar draws ants and roaches every bit as reliably as rotting food draws flies. A recycling cart that has never been washed is frequently in worse condition than the garbage cart beside it, because nobody has ever thought to check.
