A trash bin at a vacation rental or Airbnb in South Florida gets dirtier, faster, than the bin at an ordinary family home, and in most turnover routines nobody is assigned to clean it. Short stays mean more food waste, more loose bags and more guests who never learn the collection day. The practical answer is a recurring bin cleaning scheduled on collection day, after the truck has emptied the cart, so every guest opens a clean cart.

Why does a vacation rental trash bin get so dirty?
A vacation rental trash bin gets dirty faster than a household bin because each group of guests fills it differently and none of them look after it. Every stay ends with a fridge clear-out, and whatever the last guests bought and did not eat goes straight into the cart, often unbagged or in thin grocery bags.
Then there is timing. A family learns its collection day and puts the cart out. Guests who stay three nights usually do not, so full bags can sit in a closed cart in the Florida heat for longer than the house's own schedule would ever allow. Leaking bags pool in the base channel, and the residue bonds to the plastic before anyone notices.
Last, the bin belongs to no one's checklist. The cleaner turns the beds and wipes the kitchen. The guests leave. The owner is often in another city. The cart sits outside all of it.
Do South Florida cities have trash rules for vacation rentals?
Yes. Some South Florida cities write trash handling directly into their vacation rental rules, and the owner is the one held to them. Wilton Manors in Broward County is a clear example: under Section 10-116 of its code, as the City of Wilton Manors summarises it, a vacation rental's solid waste container may not go to the curb before 6:00 p.m. on the day before pickup, and must come back in by midnight on the day of pickup.
The same city page lists two more requirements for vacation rentals:
- A notice placard, mounted inside the front door, explaining where trash is stored and how collection works.
- Signage on the containers themselves showing the pickup day and hours.
Wilton Manors lists fines for violations starting at $250 for a first offence. Rules differ from city to city across Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach County, so check your own city's vacation rental page before you write your house guide.
None of these rules require the cart to be washed. What they do mean is that the bin is part of what a city expects a rental owner to manage, and a guest who has to handle it should find it in a state they are willing to touch.
Does a dirty trash bin affect guest reviews?
A dirty trash bin can end up in a review, because it is one of the few parts of a rental a guest is asked to deal with personally. Guests read the house guide, carry the kitchen bag outside and lift the lid. If what comes up is the smell of the last four stays, that is the moment they remember.
We cannot give you a figure for how often that happens, and we would not trust anyone who offers one. The mechanism is simple enough without it: the kitchen can be spotless, but the bin is outside the cleaning checklist, so it is the one thing that tells the guest the checklist has a gap.
Flies and ants follow the same logic. A cart with residue in the base attracts them to the side of the house, and from there to the kitchen door.
Can the turnover cleaner just rinse the bin?
A turnover cleaner can rinse the bin, but a rinse does not remove the problem. Cold water from a garden hose moves loose debris around; it does not lift the dried residue film from the walls, the underside of the lid or the base channel, which is where the smell actually comes from. The cart looks better for an afternoon and smells the same by evening.
There are two other catches. A rinse runs dirty water across the driveway or the pavers guests walk on. And it takes time out of a turnover window that is usually already tight, for a job that does not hold.
What resets a bin is hot water at pressure on every surface, including the two nobody reaches. We bring our own water and tidy the area before we leave.
How should a rental owner schedule bin cleaning?
The simplest schedule for a vacation rental is a recurring cleaning on collection day, after the truck has been, because that is when the cart is reliably empty. It does not need to line up with any particular checkout; it just needs to happen often enough that no guest arrives to a cart that has turned.
A practical setup looks like this:
- 01Start with a reset. If the cart has never been cleaned, book a one-time deep clean first: $65, covering two bins, which at most rentals is the garbage cart and the recycling cart.
- 02Move to monthly. For a property with steady bookings, monthly is the interval that keeps a cart from building up between visits: $30 a visit for two bins. Each additional bin is $10.
- 03Tell us the collection day and where the carts are kept. We clean on pickup day, once the truck has emptied the carts, so nobody needs to be on site.
- 04Add the bin to the house guide. Collection day, the curb times your city sets, and where the carts go back afterwards.
The monthly plan runs for a year: $30 a month, or twelve cleanings for $324 paid up front — 10% off the $360 it costs month by month. The full price list is on the pricing page, and every plan states the two-bin allowance up front.
What about rentals with a shared dumpster or cart bank?
Rentals inside a condo building or an HOA with a shared dumpster or cart bank are a different case, because the containers usually belong to the association rather than to the unit owner. The owner of one unit generally cannot arrange cleaning for a shared enclosure alone; that decision sits with the association or the property manager.
We clean shared containers too, through our commercial dumpster cleaning service, which is booked by whoever manages the enclosure.
The short version
A vacation rental's trash bin takes more abuse than a family's and sits outside every turnover checklist. Some cities, like Wilton Manors, already set rules for how rental owners handle trash. A hose rinse does not fix a cart; hot water at pressure does. Reset it once for $65, then keep it on a monthly plan at $30 for two bins, cleaned on collection day, after the truck.
